Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) are an annual plant. The flowers track the sun in the course of a day. However, when fully grown, mature flowerheads typically face east and do not move. Until growth stops, the leaves and buds of sunflowers do exhibit heliotropism (sun turning). Their orientation changes from east to west during the course of a day, not west to east, as some believe.
Sunflowers can be used in phytoremediation to extract toxic ingredients from soil, such as lead, arsenic and uranium. They were used to remove caesium-137 and strontium-90 from a nearby pond after the Chernobyl disaster, and a similar campaign was mounted in response to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.
These seeds come from plants I grew myself. The stalk were approximately 12+ feet tall and the largest flower heads were approx. 14 inches across.
